Q+A: Vegetables for Partial Shade

JASON ASKED:
Can you suggest vegetables not extremely sensitive to sunlight it the afternoon, as I don't get any sun after noon—when it passes over the building. (Note: Jason is growing a balcony garden.)

Response:

Arugula, kale, cucumber, Swiss chard, parsley, turnips, peas. Squash too, can do decently in partial sun: you’d want a bush type—and many summer squash are bush type, as opposed to vining (I’m guessing you don’t want a vining plant overrunning the balcony). Peas take lots of space for what they yield, so I wouldn’t bother on a balcony.
