Q+A: Plowing Weeds


DEBBIE ASKED:

There is already a bunch of weeds coming up in the garden. I'm concerned about plowing the weeds right back into the soil. Do you think that might work to kill the weeds before planting?


Response:

If the weeds are annuals, tilling is fine.

Tilling or scuffing the soil is often enough to set back annual weeds or kill them.

But...

If they are perennials (e.g. thistle, horsetail), then you might want to consider digging them out, as tilling can break up the roots and make more plants.
