Q+A: Pressure Treated Wood
SUSAN ASKED:
”I have a newly constructed outdoor planter I'd like to use for veggies/herbs but it is constructed from pressure treated wood. Are there health hazards associated?”
Response:
Great question.
I'm no expert on pressure treated wood...but the
industry association website
says, "Do not use pressure treated wood where it may become a component of food or animal feed. For example, treated wood should not be in direct contact with silage."
To answer your question, I don't know whether there are health hazards. But I'd ask a few more questions before using it. I have sent a note to the association. If I get a response I'll send you a copy and include it in a future edition of the magazine.
I got that response:
“There are no restrictions against using Pressure treated wood to build containers. We have a few recommendations.
- Do not plant anything closer than 12’’ of the pressure treated wood.
- Line your container with a breathable plastic liner.”
My take on the response? I haven’t read scientific studies about pressure treated wood, but the warning on the website along with the e-mail response prescribing a liner would absolutely rule it out in my own garden.
