Protect Balcony Tomatoes

LORRAINE WROTE:

I talked to Lorraine about encircling the tomato cage on her balcony with clear plastic to reduce the wind stress on her tomato plant.

She replied

  • “My concern is that the plastic drapes will alter the flavour of the food. I know that hothouse veggies have little flavour. Do you know if this will have an effect on the flavour?

Response:

If anything, my guess is that the drapes might improve flavour. Hot weather can improve the production of some flavour components (I think acids…though the physiology courses are so far in my past that I can’t remember for certain…so don’t quote me!!)

Most hothouse veggies are from varieties bred for hothouse production—and are also bred for shelf life (and less for flavour)

So I wouldn’t be concerned about the plastic drapes—more concerned about getting a variety known for flavour.
