Q+A: Removing Lawn
LUKE ASKED:
I was thinking of digging up about 3x20 feet of grass to expand my plot. Any guidelines for this process would be great. I have too much clay in my soil and want to incorporate more sand into it. Is this OK?
Response:
If you’re removing grass, a flat spade works well.
You use the spade to cut parallel lines through the grass (and its roots), the width of the spade. Then, use the spade to chop underneath and lift up the grass and the roots.
You’re only going down about an inch. As you progress, you can roll back the grass, soil, and roots just like a roll of sod.
Keep this roll of sod and compost it.
Sand is fine, but I’d worry more about organic matter, such as composted leaves.
