Q+A: Seed Suppliers

SUE ASKED:
Are seeds from a local retailer best?
Response:
In our book, Serving Up…No-Guff Vegetable Gardening, Donna and I explain the rationale for buying locally or domestically—or not.

Here’s what we tell readers in Serving Up…No-Guff Vegetable Gardening:

Certainly, support local businesses. And if you have local seed retailers with locally adapted varieties, then definitely try those. But remember this:

  • Most commercially grown seeds are produced in warmer climates where two or more generations can be raised in a single season.
  • A specific variety will have the same characteristics whether raised nearby or far away.
Where do local retailers really shine? Many have test gardens where they trial and showcase the varieties they distribute. Based on those trials they can pick regionally suited varieties.

By the way, we both order seeds from around the world if we find something neat.
