Q+A: Mould on Soil
DEBBIE ASKED: ”My seedlings are growing in a covered tray and there’s white stuff everywhere. Is this OK?”
Response:
NOPE. Sounds like the conditions are TOO humid.
Once your seedlings germinate, remove any cover such as a plastic dome or plastic bag.
We use the covers during germination to keep things nice and humid. But if you leave on the cover while the seedlings grow, conditions can become TOO humid.
And that’s what promotes the growth of that white stuff you see, which is probably mould. While the white stuff might not kill the seedlings, those humid conditions are perfect for damping off disease, which would quickly wipe out your seedlings.
